Barrow Sets End-October Power-Supply Target After Gambian Blackout Protests

President Adama Barrow acknowledged failures in planning, generation and maintenance after prolonged electricity cuts triggered protests in Banjul and surrounding communities. He said a 24-MW unit at Brikama Power Station is in final installation and that supply should improve by the end of October 2026. Barrow also said a 50-MW solar project at Soma has been awarded and its contractor is mobilising. A task force chaired by Vice President Muhammed B.S. Jallow will publish updates every two weeks, while Barrow cited record demand, simultaneous unit failures and reduced seasonal hydropower alongside domestic shortcomings.
