Hurricane Lowell Cuts Power to 60,000 as Damaging Winds Hit Hawaii

Hurricane Lowell’s closest pass west of Kauai and Niihau brought damaging winds and left more than 60,000 Hawaii homes and businesses without power early Tuesday, including about 90% of Kauai County customers. At 12:00 UTC, the National Hurricane Center placed Lowell 110 miles northwest of Lihue, moving north at 18 mph with sustained winds of 105 mph. Lihue Airport reported 53 mph sustained winds and a 75 mph gust. The center warned of another 4 to 8 inches of rain on Kauai, flash flooding, mudslides and 2 to 4 feet of storm surge.
