Israeli-Born Neuroscientist Reports Early Drug Results for Alzheimer’s and Depression

Israeli-born neuroscientist Prof. Orly Lazarov says her University of Illinois Chicago lab is in the early stages of developing a drug designed to promote hippocampal neurogenesis and alter the profiles of newly formed cells. Lazarov said that the candidate produced positive results in brain organoids representing different genetic and clinical profiles and good results in animals. Her team is also developing a method to measure neurogenesis in living people. Related studies linked distinct adult hippocampal neurogenesis patterns to preserved cognition in older adults and found that neurogenesis is dysregulated in major depressive disorder, supporting further study of potential therapeutic targets.
