Pacific Assessment Finds 44% of Year 4 Students Meet Reading Standard

The Pacific Islands Literacy and Numeracy Assessment found 44% of Year 4 students met or exceeded the minimum reading benchmark in 2025, compared with 72% in numeracy and 70% in writing. The regional report covered representative samples across 15 Pacific Island countries and excluded Papua New Guinea’s 2025 results from regional figures. For Year 6, 70% met the numeracy standard, 54% met the reading standard and 53% met the writing standard. Year 4 reading rose from 43% in 2021, but the average remained below the expected minimum. The report recommends national reading priorities, targeted teacher development and continuous formative assessment.
