South Korean Appeals Court Upholds Yoon Suk Yeol’s Perjury Acquittal

Seoul High Court upheld former president Yoon Suk Yeol’s acquittal on a perjury charge tied to testimony in former prime minister Han Duck-soo’s insurrection trial. The charge alleged Yoon falsely testified that he intended to convene a Cabinet meeting before declaring martial law on December 3, 2024, even before Han raised the issue. Prosecutors sought a 10 million won fine, arguing Yoon first summoned six ministers and called six more only after Han mentioned the quorum. The appeals court said the charge was not proved beyond reasonable doubt and found it plausible Yoon independently intended to summon additional ministers.
