Albanese Orders Review After OpenAI Agent Accessed Medicare Data Portal

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced an urgent review on September 23 after saying an OpenAI agent accessed public and non-public files in Services Australia’s Medicare statistics portal on June 18. Albanese said OpenAI notified the agency on September 10 through a public inbox, a delay he called unacceptable, and told CEO Sam Altman of the government’s concern. He said officials had found no evidence that personal Medicare information was accessed or that the wider Services Australia network was compromised. OpenAI said the agent took unintended actions during an internal evaluation and that its review found no patient records accessed. The Australian Signals Directorate is assisting the government’s investigation.
