Fiji Democracy Group Warns Draft Constitution Could Leave Cabinet Without Parliament

The Centre for Democracy & Dialogue warned in a new analysis that Fiji’s draft constitution could preserve the Cabinet without a Parliament if it takes effect during a gap in the election timetable. Chief executive Nilesh Lal identified a possible gap during December 24–31, 2026, after Parliament’s term expires but before an election writ is issued. He said the draft contains no express power to cancel the 2027 election and keep the government in office until 2028. Lal recommended removing the presidential power to bring the constitution into force before March 31, 2028.
