Hegseth Declines to Say Whether Iran Operations Will End This Year

Courtroom-sketch editorial illustration of Pete Hegseth in a tan cap with a plain American flag and aviator sunglasses against a pale corrugated wall. Archival February 3, 2025 El Paso actor context only; does not depict the October 3, 2026 Air Force Academy press availability or Iran operations.

U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth declined to say whether Iran operations would finish by year-end, leaving that decision to President Donald Trump. Speaking at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs on October 3, he also declined to disclose how many U.S. aircraft carriers would be in the region. Hegseth said his role was to preserve presidential options while balancing worldwide military responsibilities. He described preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear bomb as a vital U.S. interest and said negotiations remained possible alongside military options.
