A senior U.S. official said Thursday evening that the American military is sending a third aircraft carrier and a second Marine unit to the Middle East amid the continuing conflict with Iran. The additional forces’ identities, arrival timetable and further scope had not been announced when the disclosure was reported. Earlier fleet reporting placed the carriers George Washington and George H.W. Bush in the Arabian Sea, alongside the Boxer amphibious group and the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit. The Theodore Roosevelt had departed San Diego on September 27, but the report did not establish which carrier would constitute the newly disclosed reinforcement.
