Suspect in Australian MP Helen Haines Attack Linked to Posts Criticizing Israel

The man arrested after Australian MP Helen Haines was struck by a vehicle had shared Gaza fundraisers and criticism of Israel online, according to an examination of his social-media history. Brendan Nugent, 43, was detained after the collision outside Haines's Wangaratta electorate office on October 19. His motive remains unknown, and the reviewed interactions with Haines showed no indication of hostility toward her. Haines, the independent MP for Indi, lost a leg and remains critically ill after surgery at The Alfred hospital in Melbourne. Victoria Police said investigators were examining whether the collision was intentional.
