French Police Make More Than 1,300 Arrests After Cost-of-Living Protests

French police made more than 1,300 arrests after Saturday's nationwide demonstrations against rising living costs, according to figures reported on Sunday. More than 400,000 people marched in major French cities, with clashes erupting after groups of masked protesters broke away from demonstrations. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez blamed much of the violence on “ultra-left” extremists. The protests followed four weeks of student demonstrations over the poor condition of French schools, and similar nationwide marches a week earlier also descended into unrest. Unions and Yellow Vest protesters planned further marches.
