Brazilian Police Cancel Flávio Bolsonaro’s Passports After Surrender Deadline

Brazil’s Federal Police cancelled Senator Flávio Bolsonaro’s ordinary and diplomatic passports on October 27 after he missed a Supreme Court deadline to surrender them. The cancellation was entered in the police system at noon Brasília time, an hour after the deadline expired. The action implemented an order by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. Police will formally notify his office that Bolsonaro did not hand over the documents and that they have been cancelled. The restriction applies through migration systems at ports and airports. In a video published on October 26, Bolsonaro said police officers had approached him in Brasília as he left the home of his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro. He said he would surrender his passports and called the measure a ‘clear attempt to intimidate me’. His statement came before the following day’s missed deadline. The order forms part of an investigation involving Bolsonaro and lawyer Willer Tomaz over suspected money laundering and the illegal movement of funds across borders. The confidential ruling also prohibited contact between the two and required Bolsonaro to surrender any travel documents issued by other countries within 24 hours. The measures followed Bolsonaro’s defeat by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the October 25 presidential runoff.
