Rays Rally in 12th Inning to Beat Brewers 4–3 and Force World Series Game 5

Ben Williamson hit a pinch-hit single in the 12th inning as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4–3 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, early Wednesday. The Game 4 victory prevented a World Series sweep and cut Milwaukee’s series lead to 3–1. The game ended at 12:28 a.m. local time after 4 hours and 20 minutes. Milwaukee rookie shortstop Cooper Pratt had homered in the top of the 12th to put the Brewers ahead 3–2, leaving them three outs from their first championship. Tampa Bay’s reply began when Junior Caminero reached on third baseman Joey Ortiz’s throwing error. Liam Hicks, Jonny DeLuca and Chandler Simpson then singled against Shane Drohan. Cedric Mullins, running for Caminero, scored on DeLuca’s hit to tie the game, and Simpson’s single loaded the bases with nobody out. Rays manager Kevin Cash sent Williamson to bat for Victor Mesa Jr. Williamson swung at the first pitch and bounced the winning single over first baseman Jake Bauers into right field. “We love the challenge,” DeLuca said after the game. The league’s official posts recorded DeLuca’s tying hit and Williamson’s walk-off. Milwaukee had entered the game with a 3–0 series lead. Game 5 is scheduled for Wednesday, October 28, again at Tropicana Field. Jacob Misiorowski is scheduled to start for the Brewers; Cash said Tampa Bay’s pitching plans remained unsettled.
