Cappadocia Rock Collapse Toll Reaches Three; Four Injured Leave Hospital

Three people were confirmed dead and five injured after a rock formation collapsed beside the entrance to Göreme Open-Air Museum in Türkiye’s Cappadocia region on Thursday, October 29, Nevşehir Governor Hüseyin Kök said. Four of the injured had been discharged from hospital after treatment. One patient remained hospitalized with a hip fracture, according to the governor’s account of the casualties. The collapse involved one of the area’s fairy-chimney formations. Search operations at the site had ended by the time of the updated report. Kök said two of those killed were Turkish citizens. “We are deeply saddened by those who lost their lives,” the governor said. Justice Minister Akın Gürlek announced that the Nevşehir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office had immediately opened an investigation into the collapse. He said one deputy chief prosecutor and two prosecutors had been assigned to the inquiry. Nevşehir Municipality separately postponed the Fatih Bulut concert that had been scheduled for the evening of October 29 at the Kapadokya Culture and Arts Center. In its announcement, the municipality linked the postponement to the deaths and injuries in Göreme, offered condolences to the bereaved and wished those injured a speedy recovery. The concert was deferred to a later date.
