Celtics Owners Make Record $200 Million Gift to Boston Children’s Hospital

Boston Celtics owners are making a $200 million donation to Boston Children’s Hospital on October 29, the largest gift in the hospital’s history. The ownership group led by Bill Chisholm is supporting pediatric care and research, including a planned behavioral-health campus in Boston’s Brighton neighborhood. Half of the total comes from Rob and Karen Hale’s previously disclosed $100 million commitment, announced in December. Their pledge prompted other members of the ownership group to match that amount. Chisholm described the owners’ approach to community giving, saying: “This was a platform for good.” The Hale commitment is part of the $200 million total, rather than an additional donation. The gift supports five areas: the Brighton behavioral-health campus, pediatric nurse training, emerging therapies for childhood diseases, a children’s-health innovation fund and programs for families. The planned campus has a reported cost of $640 million. The hospital’s earlier account of the Hale gift places the new Brighton building on the Franciscan Children’s campus. Franciscan Children’s joined the Boston Children’s health system in 2023. The owners also give through the Shamrock Foundation, which distributed approximately $7.5 million to around 500 New England nonprofit organizations last year.
