Kariv Calls for Knesset Leadership Changes, Term Limits and State Inquiry
Published
Gilad Kariv called on October 30 for a new Knesset speaker, temporary parliamentary committees and a series of legislative changes. In a morning post, he set out an agenda covering term limits, a proposed “defendant law,” repeal of judicial-overhaul laws and a state commission of inquiry. He shared the statement with a recording of remarks he said he had made that morning in a television interview. “The first step begins in the Knesset,” Kariv wrote. His list starts with electing a speaker and establishing temporary committees. It then calls for passing what he described as the “defendant law” and legislation limiting terms in office, repealing laws he characterized as part of the judicial overhaul, and legislating the establishment of a state commission of inquiry. Kariv argued that Benjamin Netanyahu must not remain at the helm and claimed that most Israelis recognize the danger of his continued rule. His post did not name a speaker candidate or set out bill texts, the proposed term limits, a mandate for the inquiry or a timetable for votes. In a separate statement the same morning, Yair Golan urged replacing the government and opposed excluding citizens’ votes because of their origin or names. Golan framed the inclusion of those votes as necessary to defending democracy. His post did not present itself as a response to Kariv’s parliamentary proposals.
