Municipal Spokespeople Discuss Transparency and Resident Trust at Annual Conference

Municipal spokespeople discussed transparency, direct communication with residents and public trust at a panel in Eilat on Tuesday, 3 November. The session formed part of the annual municipal spokespersons association conference and examined how city communications teams handle information about everyday services as well as sensitive decisions. Oren Kornfeld, the association's deputy chair and Or Yehuda's municipal spokesperson, moderated the discussion. Kornfeld said, in translation, "The key to success is transparency and reliability, even when reality is challenging." He described a role extending beyond issuing announcements and answering journalists' questions to managing crises, communicating through several channels and building a city's identity over time. Spokespeople from Kfar Saba, Rehovot, Kiryat Ata, Umm al-Fahm and Ramla took part. Topics included how to respond when rumors and false information spread on social media and WhatsApp before official information reaches residents. The participants also considered how to present municipal achievements while remaining transparent when a service fails or a crisis develops. Urban renewal, municipal budgets and traffic arrangements were among the specific subjects discussed. The panel considered communication with different population groups, including in mixed cities, and closed with an emphasis on reliability, availability and transparency. The conference opened in Eilat on Monday, 2 November, bringing together municipal communications professionals from around Israel. The panel report announced no binding resolution, new service or implementation timetable.
