Nithya Raman Wins Los Angeles Mayoral Race as Karen Bass Concedes
Nithya Raman won the Los Angeles mayoral race after Mayor Karen Bass conceded on Thursday, November 5. Bass congratulated the councilmember on her victory and said she had called her to offer support for a smooth transition. Raman separately confirmed that the two had spoken and said she was honored to become the city’s next mayor. “While this is not the outcome we hoped for, the people of Los Angeles have spoken,” Bass said in her written concession. She thanked the supporters and volunteers who had worked on her campaign, along with labor, community and faith leaders, business leaders, elected officials and her family. She reaffirmed her commitment to Los Angeles and urged cooperation as the city moves forward. Raman thanked Bass for her leadership and decades of service to the city. She credited the outgoing mayor’s contribution to Los Angeles in her own public statement announcing the victory. Both candidates’ statements acknowledged their direct conversation following the result. In reflecting on her term, Bass recalled being elected four years earlier as Los Angeles’s first Black woman mayor. She credited her administration with helping people leave the streets, improving neighborhood safety, building more affordable housing and expanding opportunities for working families. Those were Bass’s assessments of her record as she prepared to hand over the mayor’s office.
