Pope Leo XIV Calls for Unity at Paysandú Mass Attended by About 40,000
Pope Leo XIV called for unity and shared responsibility during Mass in Paysandú, Uruguay, on November 7. He celebrated the service at Parque París Londres before approximately 40,000 faithful, according to a Holy See Press Office bulletin citing local authorities. Before the ceremony, he greeted attendees from an open vehicle. In his homily, Leo drew on three local symbols: the General Artigas International Bridge, palm groves and mate. He used the bridge across the Uruguay River to describe connections between neighboring peoples and the importance of communication. He said such connections needed firm foundations, linking that image to the religious life of the community. The pope described palm trees growing together in groves as an image of community and shared charitable work. He presented mate as a sign of friendship, welcome and encounter. Speaking about that tradition, Leo said: “It teaches us to share and to be together, strengthening the bonds that unite us as brothers and sisters.” He also urged religious education for children and young people, support for families and older people, and continued charitable service. Leo recalled Blessed Jacinto Vera, Bishop of Montevideo, and his horseback journeys to care for the sick. After Mass, Bishop Arturo Eduardo Fajardo Bustamante of Salto thanked the pope. Leo then visited the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, where the Vatican bulletin reported about 1,000 people gathered outside. He unveiled a commemorative plaque, blessed those present and greeted sick people.
