U.S. Offers Up to $20 Million for Information on Iran’s Nuclear Program

The United States is offering up to $20 million for information about Iran’s nuclear program, U.S. Central Command announced on November 7. The offer is administered through the State Department’s Rewards for Justice program and includes the possibility of relocation for people who provide information. CENTCOM said the offer includes “a reward of up to $20 million and possible relocation.” The official reward listing seeks information on nuclear facilities, equipment and associated personnel, including scientific personnel. It also covers information about the movement of those facilities, equipment or people, and identifies Iran as the relevant location. Rewards for Justice is administered by the State Department’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security. Its program overview says it was established under the 1984 Act to Combat International Terrorism and seeks information to protect American lives and U.S. interests and advance national security. Authorized offers are publicized through social media, messaging services and traditional media. The program’s overview describes a separate process for deciding payments. An investigative agency may nominate an informant when information produces a positive outcome, after which an interagency committee reviews the nomination and the secretary of state decides whether to authorize payment. The announced maximum and possible relocation are therefore conditional, rather than guaranteed benefits.
