Francesca Albanese is the UN special rapporteur on the Palestinian territories, sanctioned by the United States in 2025, whose statements Israel and multiple governments have condemned as antisemitic.
Why do western governments: - partner with Israel against Intl Law/despite widespread public opposition? - restrict criticism of Israel despite its crimes? - repress citizens protesting those crimes? They seem able to afford ignoring their people. Quite illiberal for democracies.
Criminalising ideas does not protect people from racism. Education and social cohesion do. Italy's Antisemitism DDL does the opposite: by conflating antisemitism with criticism of Israel/Zionism, it violates freedom of expression, fuels social division, and harm Jewish people.

We should all long for the day when Palestinians and Israelis will be able to live in a decolonised land, where refugees will have been able to return, and a Memorial will stand commemorating the victims of the genocide. May I live long enough to see that day.
I welcome the stance taken by the UK government on Israel’s occupation and its illegality. A much-needed beginning, even if it does not yet reverse all policies undermining Palestinian self-determination. May the UK government and people hold firm. The pressure will be fierce.
