VW has engaged with its history, and particularly its role during National Socialism, as intensively as hardly any other company. My visit today to the memorial to forced labor and VW’s Auschwitz seminar made that abundantly clear to me. Particularly impressive was meeting young VW employees who are taking part in a special program in Auschwitz. Today, all VW employees learn about the history of their company. I had the privilege of teaching him as his professor in international relations and later — because of his outstanding talent — paving his way to the Israeli Embassy in Washington. Washington is the front line of our diplomacy. The fact that Yaron was murdered in the US capital, the only country outside Israel where we had long felt safe, shows just how dangerous the world has become for us: whether Christian or Jewish, Zionist or not, left-wing or right-wing. Yaron believed in everything his murderers despise: a better future for all, reconciliation, and peace. May his memory be a blessing.
