The IRGC doesn’t care about Gaza anymore 🤷🏽♀️. Their demand now is keeping their militias entrenched in Lebanon and Yemen. And keep in mind: in Yemen, it is Yemenis themselves who are fighting the Houthis not Israel. Yet @cenkuygur @hasanthehun and @AnaKasparian keep framing this as “Netanyahu’s war” as if every conflict in the region somehow begins and ends with Israel when it’s clearly Iran-IRGC responsible for all of them.

Since I was a child, I’ve been obsessed with ancient history, especially Mesopotamia and Egyptology. I also studied the deeper history of the Middle East in Iraqi schools, but it was often taught through the lens of Arab nationalism, so I never fully trusted that version of it. Since then, I’ve continued reading, researching, and questioning everything. Thank God for the tools we have today, because they’ve allowed me to dig deeper and learn far more than I ever could before. But even after years of reading and researching almost every day, I still know how much I don’t know. And part of that is because what we call “history” is often just fragments accounts written by people who had their own loyalties, biases, rulers, nations, religions, and political causes, much like people today tell history through the lens of whatever side they support. That should make all of us more humble. If someone has only studied history through the narrow lens of their own nation or religion, how can they speak about it with absolute authority? We are all ignorant of huge parts of the past. This is why we need nuance, curiosity, debates and humility more than ever.
I love you @emilykschrader but I must correct you on one point “Arabs did not arrive in the Levant for the first time with the Islamic conquests.” Arabs are recorded in and around the Levant at least as early as the 9th century BCE over 1,400 years before the Islamic conquests. 9th century BCE: Assyrian records mention Arabs in the Syrian desert/Levantine frontier. The famous example is Gindibu the Arab, who fought at the Battle of Qarqar in 853 BCE as part of a coalition against Shalmaneser III. 8th–7th centuries BCE: Assyrian inscriptions repeatedly mention Arab tribes and queens operating across northern Arabia, Transjordan, and the Syrian desert. 4th century BCE onward: The Nabataeans, an Arab people, become prominent in southern Jordan, the Negev, and southern Syria, eventually ruling from Petra. 3rd–6th centuries CE: Arab federations such as the Tanukhids and Ghassanids are firmly established in the Levant, with the Ghassanids serving as Byzantine allies in Syria and Jordan. I’ve studied this history in school but I researched it again just to make sure.

All Arabs are in an uproar over the UN envoy to Yemen, accusing him of protecting the terrorist Houthis, and he is. None of you have any original ideas. It wasn’t even a few days ago that Mosab Yosef said this, and now you’re all repeating his words like sheep. The irony of accusing me of being sheep. And let me enlighten you on something: your Hamas puppet Mosab didn’t even come up with that argument. I said years ago, specifically about radical Islamists, that many of them don’t speak Arabic and therefore have little real understanding of Islam. Mosab simply took that argument and changed “radical Islamists” to “Muslims.” None of your mouthpieces seem to have any original ideas. And now you want to go after the people who actually think for themselves? Good luck. You have no idea what kind of backlash you’re inviting.
I just saw an Instagram ad for a new series about Saddam Hussein. I watched the trailer, and it already seems to frame the U.S. as the villain while portraying Saddam as some courageous leader standing up to the CIA, saying they can’t occupy Iraq even after the death of the “king” and all that nonsense. Now guess the nationality of the actor playing him promoting this pro-dictatorship and anti-U.S. propaganda piece. You probably already know. Here’s a hint: on October 19, 2023, he posted “Stop the genocide.” Not about the October 7 massacre, but about Gaza, just days into the war.
The Real Madrid fan club massacres in Iraq took place on May 13 and again on May 29, 2016. ISIS militants attacked Real Madrid supporters, opening fire and sending a suicide bomber, murdering MUSLIMS simply for loving football. Real Madrid responded by wearing black armbands in solidarity, and dedicated the title they won of the Champions League that year for the Iraqi victims. People can sit in echo chambers and pretend that Muslims are not among the primary victims of radical Islamist terrorism. They can justify hatred for all Muslims, telling them to abandon their faith or accept discrimination, and repeat that lie as often as they want. But outside those echo chambers, the record is there for everyone to see. The world knows the truth.
I love you Dillon, but you can’t take someone who was born and raised in a radical Islamist environment and use his lived experience to pretend he knows or speaks for Muslims as a whole. Since Oct. 7, the pro-Israel movement has correctly used the phrase “Hamas is ISIS.” But the son of Hamas & ISIS both organizations whose victims are overwhelmingly Muslims, do not get to speak for us or pretend to know us. That is inappropriate, inaccurate, and deeply insulting. It wasn’t enough that these movements persecuted Muslims across Iraq, Syria and Gaza, now we’re supposed to sit quietly while their former insiders help fuel hostility toward Muslims here too? It seems no matter where go we just CAN’T escape their persecution. Many Muslim allies feel completely stabbed in the back. And the laughing and applause that followed that hateful rhetoric were shameful. It needs to be called out.
No true Iraqi wishes for Iraq to be divided. Shame on anyone who says such things. And to whoever tells me, “But America is federal,” I say: America’s division is not like your plan, nor is it based on religions and ethnicities. How many ethnicities and religions are there in Iraq? That means if you divide it this way, three-quarters of the people will be displaced from their homes. And do you know the slogan that made America successful over the ages? “United we stand, divided we fall.” What you are saying about your country, Iraq, is music to every enemy’s ears. These ideas are either the ideas of a new generation that understands neither history nor politics, or there is an enemy behind them supporting and promoting this talk. Shame on you. Iraq’s strength lies in the unity of its people. Just remove Iran’s mullahs and their influence from the government, and everything will return to its proper place.
