Finance Ministry Warns Torah Study Basic Law Carries Heavy Costs
The Finance Ministry legal office on July 5 sharply opposed the government's Basic Law: Torah Study push in a letter to the Knesset legal adviser. The ministry warned that if Torah-study rights override equality principles, the bill could shift large public resources and benefits while creating heavy economic and legal risks for the economy. It also said the broad wording makes the exact cost impossible to estimate and undercuts government goals to integrate Haredi men into the IDF and workforce. Torah study is a pillar of Jewish life, but Israel still needs clear constitutional drafting that honors Torah learners, soldiers, taxpayers and national resilience.
