Knesset Legal Adviser Says Torah Bill Won't Solve Draft Crisis

Knesset Legal Adviser Sagit Afik said during a July 5 House Committee discussion on Basic Law: Torah Study that even if the bill passes, it will not solve the Haredi draft crisis. She said the initiators had not given a sufficient answer to clarify the bill's practical weight. The remark came as coalition leaders press a fast track for a Basic Law meant to honor Torah study amid service-law turmoil before elections. Torah learning is a foundation of Jewish life, but Israel still needs precise legislation that respects yeshivot, soldiers, equality before law and wartime manpower.
