Israeli Study Finds Inner-Ear Cells May Aid Hearing Regeneration

Tel Aviv University researchers said they identified a rare subset of inner-ear supporting cells with potential to become sensory hair cells after Notch signaling was inhibited. The Science Advances study, led by Prof. Karen Avraham and doctoral student Lama Khalaily with collaborators including David Sprinzak and Litao Tao, used live tissue imaging and single-cell multi-omics in cochlear explants. TAU said the finding could support future regenerative treatments for irreversible hearing loss, while stressing it is an early step and the capacity is limited to a rare cell population. The work highlights Israeli biomedical research aimed at restoring function, not only compensating with hearing aids or cochlear implants.
