High Court Petition Challenges Torah Study Basic Law

The Movement for Quality Government petitioned the High Court to annul Basic Law: Torah Study shortly after the Knesset approved it in its final readings, and asked for an interim order freezing the law pending a ruling. The group alleges lawmakers misused the Knesset’s constituent authority to alter the legal status of yeshiva students in draft enforcement and cites the accelerated committee process. The final one-sentence law declares Torah study a fundamental value in the heritage of the Jewish people and the State of Israel. Haredi sponsors called its passage historic; no court ruling was reported with the filing.
