Reed College Adopts Binding Reforms to Protect Jewish and Zionist Students

Reed College has reached a binding settlement with the Anti-Defamation League and Louis D. Brandeis Center resolving federal civil-rights complaints over antisemitic harassment. The Portland school will state that targeting Jews for adverse treatment under the label ‘Zionist’ violates its nondiscrimination policy when the policy’s other requirements are met, and it will consider the IHRA antisemitism definition in relevant cases. Reed will appoint a Title VI coordinator, require training for incoming students and student leaders, and retain an independent consultant for three years. The college did not admit wrongdoing and said the agreement strengthens its response to discrimination while protecting free speech and academic inquiry.
