Somali President Vows to Block Permanent Israeli Foothold in Somaliland

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud told lawmakers at the opening of parliament’s eighth session that his government would use diplomatic and political measures to prevent what he called a permanent Israeli foothold in Somaliland. His remarks targeted Israel’s formal recognition of Somaliland, announced in December, and the two sides’ subsequent diplomatic ties. The address was delivered Saturday at Villa Hargeisa in Mogadishu, as parliament convened amid a vacant lower-house speakership and continuing political tensions. Mohamud said the issue remained a priority for his government as it contests Israel’s growing relationship with Hargeisa.
