Olmert Reveals Shayetet 13 Killed Syrian Nuclear Adviser in 2008

Former prime minister Ehud Olmert writes in his new book that Shayetet 13 commandos killed Syrian Gen. Muhammad Suleiman at his villa near Tartus on August 1, 2008. Olmert says the force came from the sea, took positions about 150 meters from the balcony, fired three bullets after identifying Suleiman, and withdrew by boat unnoticed. Suleiman was Bashar Assad’s close adviser and a central figure in Syria’s covert Deir ez-Zor nuclear reactor, its North Korean ties, and Iranian arms transfers to Hezbollah. Leaked U.S. intelligence attributed the killing to Israeli naval commandos in 2015.
