IAEA Board Removes Syria Nuclear Noncompliance Item From Agenda

The IAEA Board of Governors removed Syria’s nuclear noncompliance item from its regular agenda on September 9 after technical and legal requirements were completed. Syria’s Atomic Energy Commission said the decision followed 18 months of national and diplomatic work, during which Damascus supported verification and placed discovered nuclear material under safeguards and monitoring. The United Kingdom said evidence showed the Assad regime built an undeclared reactor at Dair Al Zour. London backed removal after Syria’s cooperation while calling for continued safeguards, verification and inquiry into the material’s origin.
