Israel and the New Syria
Where it stands
Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa said a security agreement with Israel could lead to peace. On August 18, Israel struck Syria's Abu al-Duhur air base, saying Damascus was about to let Turkish troops deploy near Aleppo, and a senior Israeli official later said the security agreement attempt had failed. On October 5, Egypt condemned Israeli military construction in Quneitra, while Israel has said its actions in Syria are driven by security imperatives.
