Syria Welcomes Security Council Call to Respect 1974 Disengagement Agreement

Syria’s Foreign Ministry said on October 9 that it welcomed Security Council members’ unanimous emphasis on respecting the 1974 disengagement agreement. The ministry said Greece conveyed the position after Thursday’s consultations on the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force, UNDOF. Syria reiterated support for the UN mission and emphasized peacekeepers’ safety and freedom of movement. UNDOF’s mandate is to maintain the Israel–Syria ceasefire and supervise the disengagement agreement. Israel’s UN ambassador, Danny Danon, described Israel’s presence in Syria as a security buffer in a September 18 statement.
