Syrian President Says Security Agreement With Israel Could Lead to Peace

Courtroom-sketch editorial illustration of Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa seated in a dark suit before a patterned official backdrop

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa said Damascus is working with several countries to reach a security agreement with Israel that, if successful, could pave the way for comprehensive peace. He said Syria would not relinquish its claim to the Golan Heights and is avoiding confrontation with Israel because it has no interest in one. Al-Sharaa also said Syria supports the Lebanese state and army holding a monopoly on weapons and decisions of war and peace. He added that Damascus does not intend to intervene militarily in Lebanon and is discussing broader solutions with its government.
