Lula Defeats Netanyahu-Backed Flávio Bolsonaro in Brazil’s Presidential Runoff

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defeated Flávio Bolsonaro in Brazil’s October 25 presidential runoff, according to the country’s Superior Electoral Court. With 99.84% of polling sections counted, the court’s results page marked Lula as elected, with 51.76% of the vote against Bolsonaro’s 48.24%. Those figures were a counting snapshot rather than the completed tally. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had wished Bolsonaro victory in an October 5 message after the first round, saying he looked forward to restoring friendship between Israel and Brazil.
