Explosions and Air-Defense Activity Reported on Iran’s Qeshm Island

Update • Residents of Hengam Island and Bandar Abbas were also reported to have heard the explosions. The additional report did not establish their cause. • In a separate statement published on November 2, the IRGC claimed it intercepted and destroyed an MQ9 drone east of the Strait of Hormuz. That statement did not connect the claimed interception to the later explosions; the loss was not independently verified. Original report Five explosions were reported in succession on Iran’s Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz late on November 2, alongside reports that air-defense systems had been activated. Residents reportedly saw two aircraft over the island, but their type, nationality and mission were not established in the initial account. A channel associated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps reported air-defense activity over Qeshm. Local and provincial authorities had not issued an official statement when the report appeared at 21:05 UTC. The initial account did not establish what caused the explosions or identify a target. It provided no confirmed casualty or damage figures and did not establish Israeli or American involvement. Earlier that evening, the Revolutionary Guards issued a separate statement claiming that its Aerospace Force had brought down two American MQM-170 reconnaissance drones south of Qeshm. The statement attributed the purported captures to electronic warfare and claimed they brought the number of that type it had captured to four. Those assertions were Iranian military claims, rather than independently confirmed accounts of American losses. The earlier statement concerned alleged drone captures south of the island; the later reports described explosions and air-defense activity over Qeshm. Neither account established a connection between the two accounts or identified the aircraft reportedly seen during the later incident.
