Surveys Show Religious Israelis Prioritize Israel’s Jewish Character

Recent survey findings show religious Israeli respondents consistently giving greater weight to the state’s Jewish character than secular respondents. Agam Labs found that 26% preferred governance according to halacha, while 53% preferred a Jewish and democratic state in which the Jewish aspect carries greater weight. The 2025 Israeli Democracy Index found that 41% of religious respondents considered Israel’s democratic character too strong relative to its Jewish character, compared with 14% who said the opposite. The findings also show political diversity within the community, whose share of Israel’s adult population is estimated at about 12%.
