Rothman Defends Attorney-General Split in Knesset Plenum
Constitution Committee chairman Simcha Rothman used a Monday-night Knesset plenum speech to defend the bill splitting Israel's attorney-general structure, saying the adviser states the legal position but does not create law. Rothman argued that the government may, when it sees reason, adopt a different legal interpretation, a central clause also described in the bill's fast-track committee push. Earlier reports said Rothman is trying to advance only the already debated sections before Knesset dissolution, including legal opinions, state representation in court and oversight of the adviser. Supporters frame the bill as restoring elected-government authority while separating advisory and prosecution powers; critics warn it weakens an important legal gatekeeper.
