AG Bill Split Leaves Government Advice Override on Fast Track

The fast-track version of the attorney-general bill now splits off the prosecutor-general overhaul while keeping the government legal-advice override moving toward final votes. Constitution Committee chairman Simcha Rothman announced that clauses dealing with the prosecutor general would be separated, while clauses on the attorney general's advisory and representational functions would proceed. Under the active draft, the attorney general's legal position would no longer bind the government, and state representation would continue even when the attorney general disagrees with the cabinet's position. The current text also leaves all roles under the attorney general for now. Israel needs elected ministers able to govern; changes to core legal checks should be transparent and preserve lawful prosecution, election integrity and public trust.
