Knesset Passes Law Allowing Government to Reject Attorney General Opinions

The Knesset passed the Attorney General Law in its second and third readings on Wednesday, with most reports recording 65 lawmakers in favor and 51 opposed. The measure allows the government to decide that a written attorney general opinion does not reflect existing law and to set its own position in court, while exempting criminal matters. It places the office under justice minister oversight and takes effect on January 1, 2027. Supporters said it restores elected officials’ governing authority, while opponents filed High Court petitions against the law.
