House Democrats Face Divisive Vote on $3.3 Billion Israel Aid Cut

House Democrats face a Wednesday vote on Republican Representative Thomas Massie's amendment to block $3.3 billion in U.S. aid to Israel. A new estimate put Democratic support at about 150 members, while earlier reporting quoted one lawmaker predicting at least 40 and the Progressive Caucus chair expecting a very sizable bloc. Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries opposes the measure, calling it overly broad because it would also restrict humanitarian, embassy, peace-building and counterterrorism funding, but he is not whipping the vote. The amendment is expected to fail because most Republicans support Israel, yet the vote will expose a widening Democratic split over the alliance.
