Leading Israeli Philosopher Avi Sagi Dies at 72

Professor Avi Sagi, a leading Israeli philosopher of Jewish thought and co-author of the IDF ethics code, died Thursday in Tel Aviv at 72. The Bar-Ilan University professor emeritus and senior Shalom Hartman Institute fellow wrote and edited dozens of works on Jewish philosophy, religion, morality and existentialism. He founded and led Bar-Ilan's Hermeneutics and Cultural Studies program for two decades and received the 2022 Bialik Prize for Jewish Thought. Sagi grew up in Bat Yam, joined Bnei Akiva and served in the Nahal Paratroopers; his funeral was scheduled for Friday at Yarkon Cemetery.
