Ousted Turkish Opposition Leader Resigns and Forms New Party

Özgür Özel, the court-ousted leader of Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party, said Tuesday that he was leaving the CHP and forming a new party with allied lawmakers. Özel said the movement would become parliament’s main opposition by a wide margin and seek to govern Turkey. A May appeals-court ruling annulled the 2023 congress that elected him, citing alleged irregularities, and reinstated former chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu. Reports said the new movement, expected to be called Yeni Parti, could launch later this week. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s government denies intervening in the judiciary.
