German Prosecutors Treat Israel-Pin Assault as Attempted Murder

German prosecutors are investigating the assault of a 65-year-old German man wearing an Israeli flag pin as attempted murder and dangerous bodily harm. Authorities said a 20-year-old Syrian suspect allegedly punched and kicked the victim, including in the head, in Höchberg near Würzburg after a verbal dispute. The victim, a member of the German-Israeli Society, suffered a fractured vertebra and multiple bruises and remains hospitalized. Investigators cited indications of an anti-Israel, antisemitic and Islamist motive; the suspect was arrested at the scene and remanded in custody.
