Tisha B'Av Begins as Worshippers Stream to the Western Wall

Tisha B'Av began at sunset Wednesday as worshippers gathered at the Western Wall to read the Book of Lamentations and recite kinot mourning the destruction of the First and Second Temples. Tens of thousands of Jews from across Israel are expected at the plaza through Thursday night, with many sitting on the ground according to the customs of the fast. Police and Border Guard forces deployed around Jerusalem's Old City and holy sites, while private vehicles were barred from the area. The fast ends Thursday night, after a 7 p.m. gathering of songs and prayers for unity and consolation.
