Knesset Legal Adviser Finds Material Flaws in Draft-Arrest Freeze Law

Knesset legal adviser Sagit Afik told the High Court that the process used to enact the law freezing arrests of Haredi draft evaders contained two material flaws. She said the final text exceeded the scope of the original bill as a new subject, contrary to Knesset rules and Basic Law: The Knesset. Afik also found that the process failed the heightened standard required after October 7, given updated IDF manpower needs and substantial constitutional concerns. The law, suspended by the court after passage, would pause arrests, investigations and enforcement for qualifying yeshiva students through November 30.
