Knesset Counsel Says Draft-Arrest Freeze Must Be Voided

Knesset legal counsel told a nine-justice High Court panel on Tuesday that the law freezing arrests and enforcement against Haredi yeshiva students subject to draft orders should be voided. Attorney Yitzhak Bart said the measure was enacted through a procedure inconsistent with Knesset rules and Basic Law: The Knesset, adding that there was “no choice” but cancellation. The law passed 58-54 on July 14 and was suspended by the court the following day. The government sent no attorney to defend it, and the court has not yet issued a final ruling.
