Iraq Opens Probe Into Saudi Drone-Launch Claim

Courtroom-sketch editorial illustration of Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi seated at a government conference table beside a laptop and microphone with the Iraqi flag behind him

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi ordered security authorities to investigate Saudi Arabia’s statement that drones targeting Riyadh and oil facilities in the Eastern Province were launched from Iraqi territory by Iran-backed armed groups. Baghdad said it will not allow its land or airspace to serve as a corridor or launch point for attacks on neighboring states. Iraq said investigators are reviewing the evidence and information and will take legal action against anyone found responsible. Saudi Arabia said its air defenses intercepted and destroyed the drones and reserved the right to respond to the sources of the attack.
