U.S. Rules Out Hormuz Transit Fees in Any Iran Deal

A U.S. official said a prospective agreement between Washington and Tehran will not include transit fees or taxes on ships using the Strait of Hormuz. The official said Iran presented unreasonable demands that Washington and Oman rejected. Oman has separately advanced a Gulf-backed plan allowing Iran to collect voluntary service payments from vessels, while the United States opposes Iranian tolls. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has warned that letting Tehran charge for passage through an international waterway would threaten the global economy and create a dangerous precedent, as mediators seek to restore secure shipping after the interim ceasefire collapsed.
