Israel’s Embassy in Spain Accuses RTVE of Spreading False Claims
Published
Israel’s embassy in Spain accused the country’s public broadcaster, RTVE, on Friday, October 30, of amplifying false claims against Israel in its coverage of a tragedy. In a Spanish-language statement, the embassy said the broadcaster was promoting allegations without information or evidence. The criticism was issued through the embassy’s official account and was directed at the broadcaster’s handling of claims about Israel. The embassy said it was unacceptable to spread such accusations amid a tragedy. It concluded: "Journalism must combat hoaxes, not amplify them." The post included a screenshot showing a television discussion alongside railway footage, with an added caption accusing the broadcaster of amplifying hoaxes. The post establishes the embassy’s criticism; it does not independently document the full broadcast. The diplomatic response came as misinformation about the Urda rail collision circulated in Spain. In a separate interview published on Friday, Maldita.es cofounder Clara Jiménez Cruz described unsupported online narratives blaming foreign sabotage, particularly Israel or the United States, and alleging interference with railway safety systems. Speaking with presenter Aimar Bretos on Hoy por Hoy, she said the spread of the allegation against Israel showed signs of coordination and professional organization.
